Lorin F. Wheelwright was born in Ogden, Utah on December 20, 1909. He earned a doctorate in music from Columbia, and worked at the Oswego State Teachers College in New York, in the Salt Lake City schools, and as head of the Coordinating Council of Higher Education for the state of Utah. A Centennial Committee of twelve was organized in 1970 with Heber G. Wolsey as chairman. Upon Wolsey's resignation in 1973, President Dallin Oaks appointed Lorin F. Wheelwright chairman and executive leader of the Centennial. Dr. Wheelwright served as chair until 1976, when the Centennial Committee was disbanded.
